Mexico's government appears to be responding to pressure from the US administration under President Donald Trump. Politico magazine also reported that the US might block oil imports to Cuba as part of its strategy. This comes after Venezuela's oil shipments to Cuba were halted, making Mexico the primary oil source for the Caribbean country, which is currently facing energy shortages and significant power outages. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently met with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente in Washington to discuss a range of bilateral issues, including trade, security, and regional stability. However, neither party commented directly on the oil supply issue.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly stated that the oil shipments are a form of humanitarian aid and will continue.
