Hyundai's big bet on India
South Koreas Hyundai Motor Group has announced a planned $15.5 billion investment in India between 2026 and 2032, calling the country a "strategic" core market for its emerging-market growth. The pledge follows a meeting between Hyundai executive chair Euisun Chung and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Hyundai said it will create a dedicated investment entity in India to manage the program.
Hyundai said the seven-year program will span manufacturing expansion, research and development infrastructure, local supplier development for parts localization, and investment in future technologies. The company described the move as a reaffirmation of a multi-decade commitment to the Indian market, saying the investment supports its plans for the next 30 years and beyond.
Market context and positioning
Indias passenger car market has been surging: industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reported a record monthly sales figure in August, with 439,000 units sold more than 36% higher year-on-year. Hyundai currently ranks among the top automakers in India, with 247,980 passenger cars sold between April and August of this year. The company has a total production capacity of 1.4 million vehicles across its Indian facilities and exports cars from those plants.
While Hyundai is a major player, it faces strong competition in India from domestic and international rivals. SIAM data showed Maruti Suzuki was the top seller over the AprilAugust period, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra. For the fiscal year ended March 2026, Hyundai slipped to fourth place, edged out by Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors.
In 2024 Hyundai also listed its India unit, Hyundai Motors India, in what was the countrys largest-ever initial public offering, raising $3.3 billion. That listing and the new investment plan underline Hyundais broader strategy to deepen its footprint in one of the worlds fastest-growing auto markets.
The company did not disclose a detailed split of how the $15.5 billion will be allocated by year or by project, but indicated capital will flow into production capacity, R&D, supplier development and future-technology programs that could include electrification and software-driven mobility features.
Taken together, the scale of the commitment and the creation of a dedicated local investment vehicle signal Hyundais long-term intent to solidify and expand its operations in India as demand continues to grow.
