At a glance

  • Global dividends reached $2.3 trillion in 2025.
  • Developed markets contributed 83% to dividend growth.
  • Financial and industrial sectors saw significant increases.
  • Strong outlook for dividend growth in 2026.

In 2025, global dividend payouts surged by 5.3% to reach a new record of $2.3 trillion, according to an analysis by Vanguard. Despite a sluggish third quarter, where dividends saw a slight dip of 0.2% primarily due to adjustments in payout schedules by China's major banks, the final quarter of the year witnessed a robust recovery with a 7.7% increase, totaling $673 billion. Viktor Nossek, Head of Investment and Product Analysis at Vanguard Europe, highlighted the significance of this new record, marking the fifth consecutive year of growth. "This achievement is particularly notable given the ongoing market volatility driven by geopolitical uncertainties and the rising influence of artificial intelligence," Nossek stated. He emphasized that dividends play a critical stabilizing role in portfolios for both private and institutional investors. For those focused on high-yield investments, dividends have constituted over a third of returns over the past five years. Developed markets were key contributors, accounting for 83% of the growth. Within sectors, financial stocks saw a 14% increase, while industrial companies posted a 13% rise.

Market Analysis

Looking ahead to 2026, Nossek predicts further momentum for dividend payouts. "Rising prices for precious and industrial metals are bolstering cash flows in the industrial and materials sectors, traditionally high-yield areas," he explained. Additionally, growing skepticism around overvalued AI and Mag7 stocks is enhancing the appeal of dividend-rich value stocks. In this environment, where investors are increasingly seeking stable payouts and lower valuation risks, companies with strong balance sheets and sustainable payout ratios are expected to continue expanding their dividend policies, according to Vanguard.
