Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to embark on a European tour, during which he aims to secure new agreements on military support and energy supplies.
This announcement comes at a critical time as Ukraine continues to fend off Russian aggression. In Greece, the first stop of his tour, Zelensky intends to sign a significant contract for gas imports to ensure energy security for the upcoming winter. The contract is valued at two billion euros and is seen as essential to compensate for the shortfalls in Ukrainian energy production caused by ongoing Russian airstrikes on the countrys infrastructure. European partners are expected to assist in financing these energy imports.
In addition to energy agreements, Zelensky is focused on bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities. In France, he has prepared a "historic agreement" aimed at enhancing Ukraines air force and missile defense systems. Although specific details were not disclosed, Zelensky's previous visits to Paris have resulted in the provision of Mirage fighter jets to Kyiv. Following his visits to Greece and France, Zelensky will travel to Spain for further discussions, although no concrete agreements have been announced for this stop. However, he emphasized the importance of acquiring air defense systems and related missiles, which remain a priority on Ukraine's wishlist.
This diplomatic tour underscores the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces as it defends itself against the Russian invasion, which has been ongoing for over three and a half years. The damage from relentless Russian drone, missile, and cruise missile attacks has been substantial. As the situation develops, Zelensky's efforts to secure international support remain crucial in Ukraine's ongoing struggle for sovereignty and stability.
