Market summary

Taiwanese equities closed lower on Tuesday, with the Taiwan Weighted index slipping 1.31% as weakness in several sectors pushed the market down. The benchmark ended at 45,257.64, down 599.63 points from the previous close. Decliners outnumbered advancers by a wide margin on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, with 809 stocks falling, 233 advancing and 81 unchanged.

The days heaviest losses were concentrated among semiconductor- and electronics-related names, while a handful of small-cap and shipping stocks posted strong gains. Leading the winners, Ta Liang Technology Co Ltd (TW:3167) jumped 10.00% to 770.00, First Steamship Co Ltd (TW:2601) gained 10.00% to close at 6.82, and Shih Wei Navigation Co Ltd (TW:5608) rose 10.00% to 15.95 late in the session.

On the downside, Nano Electronics and Micro System (TW:7730) slumped 9.25% to 157.00. Memory-related and component suppliers also saw steep declines: Elite Semiconductor Memory Technology Inc (TW:3006) fell 9.16% to 248.00, and FIT Holding Co Ltd / Foxlink (TW:3712) dropped 8.72% to 20.40.

Volume and breadth suggested broad selling pressure across the market rather than isolated profit-taking. Market participants pointed to weakness in Glass and Electricity sectors as additional drags on the index, though intraday sector leadership varied.

Commodities and FX

In commodities trading, US crude oil for October delivery (WTI) rose 0.68% to $84.31 a barrel, while Brent crude for October delivery increased 0.55% to $91.37 a barrel. Gold futures for December eased 0.57%, trading at $4,448.42 a troy ounce.

On the currency front, USD/TWD dipped marginally by 0.02% to 31.86. The TWD/CNY cross was essentially unchanged, moving 0.14% to 0.21. Meanwhile, US Dollar Index futures were flat at 99.53, indicating little movement in the broader dollar on the day.

Outlook

The sharp intraday decline in the Taiwan Weighted underscores the markets sensitivity to sector-specific swings, particularly in technology and memory-related stocks. Investors will be watching upcoming earnings, global commodity price trends and any developments in foreign exchange flows that could influence Taiwan-listed exporters.

For now, breadth suggests caution: with a large number of stocks falling and several notable individual losers, traders may look for stabilization or better-defined sector leadership before committing to fresh long positions.
