North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is positioning itself to become a pivotal hub for high-tech innovations in the defense industry. In collaboration with industrial partners, the state is establishing a platform for security and defense technologies. Central to this initiative is the Production Launch Centre Defence (PLCD), a technology and development center aimed at fostering collaboration between large corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises, startups, and research institutions. During the Munich Security Conference, NRW's Minister of Economic Affairs, Mona Neubaur, signed a declaration of intent with representatives from key defense and technology companies, including Rheinmetall, Lockheed Martin, and the lightweight construction specialist Mubea.
This partnership aims to enhance the networking of economic, research, and innovation clusters within the state, addressing specific military and security capabilities needed by organizations such as the Bundeswehr and NATO.
Neubaur emphasized that investing in defense capabilities is crucial for maintaining peace, stating, "Times of change are not just a phrase for us but a mandate for action. We must invest strategically in our defense capabilities, building the foundation in research labs, factories, and innovation centers." The initiative intends to make the Rhineland region a likely site for these developments. Rheinmetall's CEO, Armin Papperger, highlighted the alignment of this project with the company's digital strategy, focusing on connectivity, artificial intelligence, and networking. "We plan to collaborate with Lockheed and the broader industry to quickly build a new infrastructure," he noted. Dennis Goege, Chief Executive Europe at Lockheed Martin, acknowledged NRW's role in the production of F-35 components, expressing enthusiasm about extending this partnership. Felix Muhr from Mubea also praised the project, noting its potential to support economic innovation and help navigate current challenges. The PLCD is still in the conceptual phase, aiming to bring together businesses and research partners to develop market-ready solutions for security needs. This ambitious project underscores NRW's commitment to becoming a leader in high-tech defense solutions.
