Rheinmetall, a prominent defense technology company based in Düsseldorf, has announced its intention to acquire the military division of the Bremen-based Lürssen Group.
The companies have reached an agreement on the main terms for the takeover of Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL). The transaction is expected to be completed by early 2026, pending approval from antitrust authorities. Details of the purchase price have not been disclosed.
With this acquisition, Rheinmetall aims to expand its portfolio by entering the naval shipbuilding sector, thereby strengthening its position as a leading defense technology provider in Germany and Europe. The company, traditionally a supplier of simulation technology and protection systems to naval forces, will now significantly broaden its capabilities.
Naval Vessels Lürssen, previously known as Lürssen Defence, was separated from the yacht division in 2021. The shipyard group employs approximately 2,100 people worldwide and reported a revenue of around one billion euros in the 2024 fiscal year. It operates four shipyards in Northern Germany, including Blohm+Voss in Hamburg and the Peene-Werft in Wolgast. Rheinmetall anticipates synergies with its tank division, which has locations in Kiel and Flensburg. The infrastructure and expertise of the shipyards are expected to be beneficial for vehicle production as well.
This strategic move not only enhances Rheinmetall's market position but also demonstrates its commitment to expanding its technological and manufacturing capabilities within the defense industry.
