At a glance

  • Solar energy now accounts for 18% of Germany's electricity consumption.
  • Solar output has surpassed lignite coal and natural gas.
  • Wind energy remains the top electricity source at 27%.
  • The pace of solar installations has not increased, posing challenges for 2030 goals.

Germany's Solar Power Surge

Solar energy has become an increasingly significant part of Germany's electricity mix. In the past year, solar installations have seen a notable increase in output, contributing to 18% of the country's electricity consumption. This marks a rise from 14% in 2024, as reported by the German Solar Industry Association (BSW) in Berlin. With this growth, solar power has surpassed both lignite coal, which accounted for roughly 14%, and natural gas at about 16% of electricity production. The data, provided by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, highlights wind energy as the leading source, contributing 27% of Germany's electricity. Over the past year, more than 5.5 million installed photovoltaic systems generated approximately 87 terawatt-hours of electricity, setting a new record and exceeding the previous year by 15 terawatt-hours.

Challenges in Solar Expansion

Despite the increase in solar power output, the pace of new installations has not accelerated. In 2025, an additional capacity of 17.5 gigawatts was installed, mirroring the previous years numbers. According to BSW, this rate of expansion is insufficient to meet Germany's legally mandated targets for 2030. The Federal Network Agency confirmed this upward trend in photovoltaic use, noting that the share of renewable energy sources in Germany rose by 0.3 percentage points to 58.8%. This figure reflects the proportion of electricity fed into the national grid, excluding specific networks such as those operated by Deutsche Bahn. Last year, 74.1 terawatt-hours from photovoltaic systems were integrated into the grid, a 17% increase over the prior year. This figure accounts for household self-consumption, such as charging electric vehicles using home-based solar panels. As Germany continues to transition to renewable energy, solar power's growing share underscores the country's commitment to sustainable energy solutions, though further efforts are needed to sustain this growth and achieve future energy goals.
