At a glance

  • Porsche AG exits DAX due to poor sales performance.
  • Sartorius also moves from DAX to MDAX.
  • Scout24 and GEA enter the DAX.
  • Changes reflect a dynamic market landscape.
  • Index adjustments effective September 22.

Market Analysis

In a significant reshuffle within the German stock indices, Porsche AG has been removed from the DAX, the leading index of Germany's top 40 companies. The announcement came from Deutsche Börse on Wednesday, marking a notable shift in the composition of the country's most prestigious stock market index. The luxury car manufacturer, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, has faced considerable challenges over the past year, grappling with declining sales. This downturn has impacted its stock performance, resulting in a loss of about one-third of its value over the past 12 months. Consequently, Porsche will now find its place in the MDAX, an index comprised of medium-sized companies. Joining Porsche in the move to the MDAX is Sartorius, a supplier for the pharmaceutical and laboratory sectors. Sartorius was previously included in the DAX as part of an index expansion in September 2021. The vacancy left by Porsche and Sartorius in the DAX will be filled by Scout24, a leading online real estate platform, and GEA, a prominent supplier of equipment for the food processing industry.

Broader Index Changes

The reshuffling extends beyond the DAX and MDAX. Fielmann, a major optician chain, will transition from the SDAX to the MDAX, replacing Evotec, a drug discovery company. Additionally, in the SDAX, 1&1, a telecommunications company, will take over the spot from SGL Carbon. In the TecDAX, which focuses on technology companies, 1&1 will replace Formycon, a biosimilar developer. These changes are set to take effect on September 22 and are of particular interest to funds that replicate indices, as they will need to adjust their portfolios accordingly. The adjustments signify more than just a change in index composition; they reflect the evolving landscape of the German economy and the shifting fortunes of its companies. With these changes, market participants and investors will be closely watching the impact on stock prices and fund allocations. Overall, the reshuffle highlights the dynamic nature of financial markets and the continuous need for companies to adapt to maintain their standing in major indices.
