OpenAI Cuts Valuation Target Amid Investor Pushback
OpenAI has trimmed the valuation target for a planned private funding round that aims to raise about $30 billion ahead of a widely anticipated initial public offering next year. People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that OpenAI reduced its target from $1.4 trillion to roughly $1.25 trillion during the final stages of negotiations after resistance from potential investors.
The talks over the financing are ongoing and details could still change, the sources added. OpenAI did not comment, and Coatue Management which is negotiating to lead the round alongside another investor did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Other potential participants reported to be in discussions include investment funds from the United Arab Emirates and large asset managers such as BlackRock.
OpenAI previously raised $122 billion in March, when the company was valued at $852 billion including that fresh capital. The current fundraising effort, if completed on the reported terms, would represent a major step in the companys path toward a public listing next year. OpenAI has said it postponed its IPO to focus on AI safety.
Market Context and Investor Sentiment
The move comes as broader investor sentiment toward technology stocks has softened this week after mixed quarterly results from big names including Meta Platforms and Tesla. Concerns among some investors center on whether companies are overspending on artificial intelligence initiatives and whether those expenditures will translate into sustainable returns.
Investors are also watching how the market receives Anthropics expected IPO next month, viewing it as a potential bellwether for pricing and appetite for AI-focused listings. The outcome of that debut could influence both the terms and investor confidence for OpenAIs private financing and eventual public offering.
OpenAI reportedly expects to secure final investor commitments by the end of next week, according to a source familiar with the matter. CNBC earlier reported the $1.25 trillion target.
While the size of the planned raise and the headline valuation remain exceptionally large even after the cut, the adjustment underscores the delicate balance between ambitious pricing by private companies and the caution exercised by deep-pocketed institutional investors ahead of an IPO.
