Jim Cramer Urges Caution After Latest AI Stock Rally: Financing Risks for Data Center Players Remain

At a glance

  • Recent two-day rally in AI-related stocks may be premature; structural financing risks remain.
  • Smaller AI infrastructure firms (neoclouds) have heavy debt loads; CoreWeaves bonds have yielded up to 15%.
  • Banks and Blackstone arranged about $63 billion to finance Anthropics purchase of Broadcom hardware, but that implies Anthropic is borrowing to buy equipment rather than funding it from profits.
  • Temporary declines in oil and a drop in the 10-year Treasury yield eased pressure briefly, but Fed action, midterm elections, and geopolitical risks could reverse those gains.
  • Cramer supports the AI build-out long term but warns investors the financing environment must improve before declaring the data center trade safe.

Market Analysis

CNBCs Jim Cramer warned investors on Tuesday that the recent rebound in AI-related stocks may be premature and does not mean the data center trade is out of danger. Stocks tied to artificial intelligence climbed for a second straight session after renewed buying in chipmakers, driven in part by a financing package and Anthropics S-1 filing. But Cramer said several structural financing risks still cloud the outlook for many data center and AI-infrastructure companies.

Cramer pointed to three specific concerns. First, he highlighted the smaller AI infrastructure operatorsoften called neocloudsthat have taken on large amounts of debt to build out data centers. Rising interest rates have amplified worries about whether these companies can service that debt. Cramer singled out CoreWeave, whose bonds have traded with yields as high as 15%, and also mentioned Nebius and Iren. Although CoreWeave shares rose nearly 8% on Tuesday, Cramer cautioned that any fresh negative headlines could quickly reverse gains for these highly leveraged names.

Second, Cramer questioned how reassuring the Broadcom-Anthropic financing really is. Banks and Blackstone announced a roughly $63 billion financing arrangement tied to Anthropics purchase of Broadcom computing hardware. While the package shows lenders remain willing to fund large-scale AI investments, Cramer emphasized that Anthropic is borrowing to acquire Broadcom equipment rather than paying from operating profitsraising a different set of credit and execution risks than a cash-funded purchase would.

Finally, Cramer warned that the calmer conditions in the bond market that day could be fleeting. Oil prices had fallen and the 10-year Treasury yield slipped below 5%, temporarily easing borrowing pressures on highly leveraged AI infrastructure firms. But those dynamics could change quickly, especially with the Federal Reserve preparing to announce its latest interest-rate decision and hold a post-meeting press conference. Near-term political riskssuch as the U.S. midterm elections and potential geopolitical flare-ups in the Middle Eastcould also inject volatility that reverses the recent easing in rates.

Cramer acknowledged he remains a strong believer in the long-term AI build-out, but he is not prepared to declare the industrys financing challenges resolved. With the exception of a dominant player like Nvidia, he said, many data center companies lack deep cash reserves and therefore must borrow heavily. High borrowing costs make returns uncertain, and that core fact has not changed despite the recent rally.

Conclusion

The latest rally underlines renewed investor enthusiasm for AI, but it does not remove the fundamental financing pressures facing smaller data center builders and other AI infrastructure providers. Until borrowing costs and credit structures for these companies look more secure, Cramer advises investors to temper optimism and consider diversifying into other sectors rather than assuming a clear, sustained turnaround in the data center trade.
