The Fraunhofer Institute's research involved an in-depth eight-month analysis of four municipal utilities. Throughout this period, over 350 processes and tasks were evaluated for their AI potential. Creating a Model Utility
From the data collected, researchers developed a hypothetical utility company with 75,000 customers, 1,000 employees, and an earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of 70 million euros. This model utility could, by effectively implementing AI, reduce its annual costs by millions of euros. Christof Spangenberg, CEO of m3, emphasized the importance of strategic AI implementation, stating, "If municipal utilities want to benefit from AI, they must avoid pursuing the wrong strategies." The study warns that without AI, costs could rise by 45% by 2035.
