  • Deutsche Telekom will demo an AI-enabled glasses prototype at MWC, built with Ray Neo (TCL subsidiary).
  • The concept uses the Ray Neo X3 Pro hardware and Telekoms Magenta AI software to combine voice, gaze and image recognition.
  • Telekom positions the device as a design study and functioning prototype, not a commercial product announcement.
  • This effort is part of Telekoms broader strategy to become a platform provider and deepen direct customer engagement.
  • Uncertainty remains over whether the prototype will lead to mass production or a Telekom-branded retail product.

Düsseldorf Deutsche Telekom will unveil a prototype AI-enabled spectacles system at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the company confirmed ahead of the event. Handelsblatt reviewed presentation materials that show the German telecom group is partnering with Ray Neo, a subsidiary of Chinese electronics firm TCL, to present a concept device that blends voice control, computer vision and heads-up display elements. The showpiece for Telekom at this years MWC is based on the commercially available Ray Neo X3 Pro. That model, produced by Ray Neo and sold internationally from roughly $1,299, features two integrated displays, cameras, microphones and speakers. According to Telekoms briefing, the glasses combine speech commands with image recognition and visual overlays that appear in the wearers field of view.

Telekom says the unit on display is a working prototype and design study rather than a commercial product announcement. A company spokesperson emphasized the demonstrations goal: to use available hardware alongside Telekoms AI infrastructure to show what is technically possible today, not to declare an imminent mass-market launch. The hardware is supplied by Ray Neo, which benefits from TCLs large-scale capabilities as a global maker of TVs and display panels. Telekom brings its own software architecturebranded Magenta AIto the project. Presentation materials highlight an agent-style AI intended to respond to both voice and gaze: users could fetch information, translate text in real time or receive contextual prompts tied to what they look at. Telekom has used the MWC in prior years to introduce devices and platforms. A previous consumer electronics effort, the Magenta Speakera planned local alternative to voice assistants like Amazons Alexaremained niche and was eventually discontinued.

The company also launched the T Phone 3, a smartphone with an integrated AI assistant, though Telekom has not disclosed sales figures for that device. With the AI glasses, Telekom is trying again to move beyond its core network business and position itself as a platform providerthis time aiming directly into users visual field rather than the living-room speaker. The cooperation model is clear: Ray Neo supplies the physical device and manufacturing know-how; Telekom supplies the AI integration and ties to its services. It remains uncertain whether Ray Neo would be a partner for any potential mass production under a Telekom-branded product. The timing of the MWC demonstration follows Telekoms annual results presentation in Bonn, where management outlined financials. For CEO Timotheus Höttges, the showcase is part of a broader strategic question: what role will network operators play in an era dominated by generative AI, when U.S. tech companies increasingly control devices and operating systems? European operators are seeking a distinct position amid that shift. For now, the AI glasses should be read as an exploratory step. Whether the concept will evolve into a marketable product carrying Telekoms brandsold at scale and supporting a new revenue streamremains open. What is clear is Telekoms intent to test a new route to customer engagement: moving the interface from the living room into a users immediate line of sight.
