  • Space-based data centers deemed economically unfeasible by Amazon.
  • High costs and limited rocket availability are significant barriers.
  • Tech companies like Blue Origin and SpaceX are exploring space data centers.
  • Alphabet's "Project Suncatcher" aims to create an orbital data center.

Amazon's cloud division leader, Matt Garman, has dismissed the idea of building data centers in space, labeling them as economically unfeasible. Speaking at the "Cisco AI Summit" in San Francisco, Garman highlighted the logistical challenges of transporting servers and other equipment into orbit. "We don't have enough rockets to launch a million satellites, so we're still quite far from this possibility," he explained. The costs associated with sending payloads into space are currently prohibitive, he added, making the venture economically impractical.

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) demands massive amounts of computing power and cooling, pushing the limits of land-based data centers. Despite these constraints, several startups and companies, including Blue Originfounded by Amazon's Jeff Bezosare exploring space-based data center concepts. The merger of Elon Musk's SpaceX with xAI also aims to enable space-based data centers. In November, Alphabet, Google's parent company, announced "Project Suncatcher," which aims to develop an orbital data center. However, for Amazon, the idea remains grounded as they focus on more immediate, terrestrial solutions. While the vision of space-based data centers is captivating, the technological and economic hurdles mean it remains a distant goal for now, even as tech giants continue to push the boundaries of innovation.
