At a glance

  • Heineken and Amazon launched Pubscription, a Fire TV app that helps users discover pubs using streaming-style categories.
  • Registered users receive four vouchers every four weeks for Heineken or Heineken 0.0; one voucher may be redeemed per week at participating pubs.
  • The promotion is limited to participating Star Pubs in England and stops on 6 January 2027 or after 15,000 redemptions.
  • Heinekens goal is customer retention and directing traffic to its ~2,350 UK Star Pubs; Amazon can integrate local offers into Fire TV and its ad stack.
  • Survey data from 15,000 respondents across ten countries suggested significant consumer appetite for easier venue discovery, motivating the experiment.

Amazon and Heineken test a streaming-style pub discovery app

Amazon and Heineken have teamed up to pilot an unusual concept that aims to bring the mechanics of streaming platforms to the nightlife economy. The two companies have developed Pubscription, a Fire TV app being trialed in the UK that helps adults find pubs and bars based on mood and preferences similar to how viewers discover films and TV shows on streaming services.

Instead of video content, Pubscription curates venues. Users aged 18 and over can browse participating pubs by categories such as lively sports bars or cozy spots for a quiet evening. The app was built with Amazon Ads Brand Innovation Lab and is initially available through Amazons Fire TV ecosystem in the United Kingdom.

Free beer vouchers and user acquisition

The pilots most headline-grabbing feature is a voucher model designed to drive footfall: registered users receive four vouchers every four weeks redeemable for a Heineken or alcohol-free Heineken 0.0. One voucher may be redeemed per week at participating pubs. The promotion is limited to participating Star Pubs in England and runs until 6 January 2027 or until 15,000 vouchers have been redeemed, whichever comes first.

Heineken says the idea grew out of a global survey of 15,000 people across ten countries. According to the research, 55% of respondents said they would go out more often if finding suitable venues were as simple as finding content on streaming platforms. Another 59% said they would be likelier to try new venues if recommendations matched their interests and mood.

Strategic motives and commercial outlook

For Heineken, the primary aim appears to be strengthening customer loyalty and directing consumers into its roughly 2,350 UK Star Pubs, rather than generating immediate direct revenue. The platform could increase on-premise sales of Heineken brands if users are nudged toward member pubs.

For Amazon, Pubscription represents another way to deepen engagement with Fire TV and to connect its ad business to local commerce. Whether the experiment can scale into a meaningful revenue stream through advertising, local partnerships or expanded services is unclear. Neither company disclosed development costs, projected user numbers, or revenue forecasts.

The trial is small-scale and geographically limited, but it illustrates how consumer tech platforms and legacy brands are experimenting with new ways to drive real-world experiences. If successful, Pubscription could become a template for blending entertainment-style discovery with local hospitality.
