Amazon Boosts German Presence with Major 2027 Investment
Amazon announced at the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin that it will invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027. The US technology and e-commerce group said the funds will be directed at expanding cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure, strengthening its logistics network, developing the Amazon Leo satellite internet project, and creating new content for Prime Video.
About €4.8 billion of the planned investment will go to enlarging the AWS Frankfurt region and the associated cloud and AI infrastructure. The company also confirmed plans to open a second research centre for robotics and artificial intelligence in Berlin, underscoring its longer-term commitment to R&D in Germany.
Amazon currently employs more than 40,000 permanent staff in Germany. The company said that previously announced logistics projects will create in excess of 3,000 additional jobs. On the satellite front, Amazon has booked 24 rocket launches with European launch services provider Arianespace as part of its push to scale the Amazon Leo satellite internet capability in Europe.
In entertainment, Prime Video plans to produce more than 15 new German productions by the end of 2027, expanding local content for its streaming service and supporting the German creative sector.
The announced package positions Amazon as a major industrial investor in Germanys cloud, logistics, space and media sectors. The company framed the investment as a broad effort to deepen local infrastructure and talent development while scaling services that rely on cloud computing and AI.
The announcement comes amid wider debates across Europe about the role of large US technology firms in national infrastructure and job creation, but for now Amazons plan signals a substantial increase in capital expenditure and hiring activity in Germany for 2027.
