Why Alibaba Becomes More Interesting Below $120

At a glance

  • Alibaba plans $56 billion in AI investments through 2029 and has already secured much of the funding plan.
  • More than $10 billion was raised via an equity placement that traded at about an 8% discount, weighing on the share price.
  • Insider purchases (~$15 million) suggest management confidence in the AI strategy.
  • Shares are technically in a larger downtrend; remaining below $120 leaves the stock vulnerable in the short term.
  • Support in the $100 area is the key zone for buyers; a breakout above the short-term trendline would target $160.

Market Analysis

Alibaba has announced plans to invest $56 billion in artificial intelligence by 2029. A large portion of that capital is already earmarked, and to finance the program the company raised fresh equitybringing in more than $10 billion through a placement that attracted strong institutional demand.

However, the placement priced at roughly an eight percent discount to the market price at the time, which diluted existing shareholders and pushed the stock lower. The share price retreated back below the $120 mark, a level the market is now watching closely.

On the positive side, insider buying by management provides a vote of confidence. The CEO and a co-founder together bought about $15 million worth of shares, signalling that company leadership believes the AI investments are sensible. Alibaba expects the investments to start paying off in two to three years.

Technically, the stock appears to be in a larger five-wave downtrend. As long as the price remains under $120, the short-term outlook is vulnerable to further weakness. A near-term drop slightly below the recent lows followed by stabilization above the roughly $100 area would be consistent with a constructive technical setup: that zone represents the stronger support and would improve the risk-reward profile for longer-term buyers.

A rebound above the short-term downtrend line would change the technical picture and refocus attention on upside targets in the region of $160.

Author's View

From a tactical perspective, Alibaba becomes more interesting beneath $120. The area just above $100 is where I see the most meaningful support; for long-term investors that level offers a more attractive chance-to-risk ratio. Given the scale of the AI program and management's personal purchases, the setup merits closer attention if shares approach that support zone, while a clear break back above the short-term trend line would be required to confirm a return to higher targets.

In the near term, investors should monitor dilution effects from the equity placement, follow any developments around the timing and effectiveness of the AI spend, and watch price action near the $100$120 range to gauge whether a durable bottom is forming.
